What is Unified Sports?

Special Olympics Unified Sports® is a model that promotes social inclusion. Unified Sports integrates individuals with and without intellectual disabilities (ID) on teams for sport training and competition to promote social engagement and development. Unified Sports participants practice weekly or bi-weekly during school time (often during lunch) to prepare for a competition with other schools in their area. Tournaments are regional in nature and are typically held once per school year in each region for each sport offered.

What is a Unified Sports Tournament?

It’s more than a competition, it’s a celebration of inclusion in sport, school and community! A host school welcomes school teams from their region to participate in the scheduled sport. The day kicks off with an opening ceremony, followed by games (usually round robin) lunch, the championships game(s) and ending with the presentation of medals/ribbons.
