Due to Covid-19 restrictions our Participation Nation program delivery model has changed for the start of the 2020-21 school year. For our Specialized Program ie: Play-4-Fun and PN Unplugged, we did not open registration in May 2020 for new schools to apply. When it is safe to do so, we will open new registrations.

As situations and circumstances change throughout the year, and based on direction and guidance from the Department of Public Health and NLESD, schools and community partners will be updated on any further changes. The following are the PN program delivery plans in place as of September 1, 2020.

Play-4-Fun (K-3)

This program will be delivered online. Facilitators will deliver the content from their homes and all participants will have the opportunity to join in from their homes. This program does not start until mid-October into November, so more details will be sent to all schools that have participated in the past.  As well, we will entertain new school communities who would like to implement this program from their homes.

PN Unplugged After School Program (Gr. 4-9)

Based on the NLESD’s, Safe Return to School Reopening Plan, school facilities will not be available for indoor extracurricular activities, practices, or rehearsals until further notice. Until further notice, no extra-curricular activities are to take place inside school sites after regular school hours. It is important that maintenance staff have adequate time to thoroughly clean schools after classes end each day. Therefore, this program for 2020-2021 has been tentatively suspended.

PN Outdoor Adventures (Gr. 7-9)

This program under the NLESD Reopening plan can operate as it is an outdoor activity. However, physical distancing, equipment cleaning and hygiene protocols will need to be followed. We will contact our program facilitators individually to ascertain if they plan to start. As well, we are opening this program to 5 additional schools in the fall. The application form will be on our website.

PN Sprockids Bicycle clubs (Gr. 4-6)

This program under the NLESD Reopening plan can operate as it is an outdoor activity. However, physical distancing must be adhered to, as well as appropriate hygiene protocols. We will contact our program facilitators individually to ascertain if they plan to start.

Core Programs:

PN Primary Achievement (Gr. 2-3) & PN Pin Winner (Gr.4-6)

Any student is eligible to receive their past rewards earned up into March 2020. Teachers may send student’s participation records to SSNL by following the link below or by visiting the SSNL website. We will send the students rewards to the school. In March we went online with our PN Active at Home Facebook series. In the Fall, this series will continue with the introduction of a YouTube Channel that will be updated with age-appropriate content weekly. Students are encouraged to participate within their family/bubble.

Junior High Jubilee (Gr. 7-9)

We await further information from NLESD on whether we can continue our regional Festival of Sports focusing on the outdoor activities such as soccer, track and field, softball, cross country running. These activities will need to take place after school or on a weekend on Community facilities with parents providing their sons/daughters transportation. Please stay tuned.

High School Spirit (Gr. 10-12)

This student-led High School program will be suspended until further direction is given from NLESD. Their current guidelines that recommend students stay within their class cohorts, and no activities after school, reduce the possibility of the programs implementations.Program staff are still working hard on program delivery. Please contact us if you have any questions.

New Program: Forest School in a Box! (Gr. K-4)

We are currently partnering with Memorial University PhD Candidate Kirsten Reid to deliver the Forest School in a Box program in Newfoundland and Labrador. Research shows that children who spend time outdoors benefit socially and physically, and demonstrate increased conservation behaviours throughout their lives. Kirsten received a Nature Canada grant (Women for Nature–Young Leader Grant) to introduce the nature inspired program throughout the province. The program actively encourages K-4 classroom teachers to take their students outside to explore while also meeting their curriculum outcomes. The program aligns with the PN program philosophy and the opportunity for School Sports NL to partner in this initiative will allow more schools and students to become involved.

In the coming weeks schools will receive information on how you as a teacher can become involved. All the information will be placed on our Website and Social Media platform as well. Everything you need as a classroom teacher to implement this program will be available to you at no cost. In return we ask that you evaluate this tool with the goal to learn from each other to improve the program. Stay tuned!
