Over the next couple of weeks School Sports NL’s Participation Nation (PN) program will be keeping kids active in school as they countdown to Christmas. Each school day, a new Christmas- themed activity will be revealed to over 200 SSNL Member schools, and this year a number of special guests will be joining in the fun.
This year marks the 4th instalment of the Active Countdown to Christmas, and both teachers and students alike look forward to the daily activities. The goal behind the Active Challenge is to get kids moving and enjoying Christmas fun while being active, with the ultimate goal being to inspire the kids to stay active during their Christmas break.
“When we started planning for this year’s countdown, we decided since SSNL is celebrating its 50th Anniversary, we needed to go big or go home, so we decided to go big!” jokes Courtney Russell, PN Core Programs Coordinator. “We’ve put a lot of work into this year, filming a video for each day. We’ve also brought in some very special guests to read the poems, so it’s going to be a great Countdown. The kids always have fun, but I think they’re in for an extra treat this year!”
Today, The Santa Shuffle kicks off the first official day of the Active Countdown to Christmas and kids across the province will be ‘breaking it down’, Santa-style. Other activities to look forward to over the coming days include everything from basketball to relay races to skipping and scooter fun. With an impressive list of special guests including well-known local mountain climber and Memorial Professor – TA Loeffler; local favourite and comedian Mike Lynch as Cecil; and basketball star, Carl English.
Videos will be released each school morning on the SSNL Participation Nation FB page, and the School Sports NL Twitter account. The first video debuted today with Santa himself reading the poem, and videos will continue to be available up to and including December 17th.
