Participation Nation
This program’s name Un-Plugged” was used as an emphasis to remind everyone about
the concern that we have with the amount of screen time that our youthare being
exposed to. This program is to help reduce the amount of time both Elementary and
High School students spend watching TV, playing video games, browsing the internet
and using smart phones in the after school time slot. Elementary Schools and High
Schools partner to offer the Participation Nation program using Grade 10 and Grade
11 students as Volunteers Program Leaders for grades 4-6.
Thank you to our funders, the Department of Tourism, Culture and Recreation. Through
their financial support, we are able to offer free High Five Principle of Healthy
Child Development training, a free hoodie to be worn when students volunteer as
well as a nutrition grant to purchase fruit and vegetables as a snack in the program.
As well, program sponsor the Dairy Farmers of NL/School Milk Foundation who have
agreed to supply all after school programs schools with 500ml of milk once a month
for all participants and leaders. Currently we have 8 sites in 8 school communities,
Nain, Port aux Basque, Plum Point, Burgeo, Lewisporte, Eastport, Dunville and St.
John’s. There are three criteria to apply for this program. 1) your school is not
currently implementing an after school program or 2) you have a program that requires
volunteers to expand or 3) your high school students would love the opportunity
and you have partnered with the feeder school please call Trisha at 729-3684 or
